A Wedding Staple: Pigs-in-a-Blanket

Whether you’re having a black tie affair in a ballroom, or something more casual, if you are having a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres you should – I want to say must – but you should consider serving pigs-in-a-blanket. It’s the one cocktail food that kids and adults enjoy.

Pigs-in-a-blanket may not sound so stylish – or even look elegant – but many caterers are doing variations of this favorite mini-food and you should find out what your options are – size of the “pigs”, type of dough and most importantly the type of mustard used for dipping.

You CANNOT serve pigs-in-a-blanket with a mayo-based fancy mustard. You need a real mustard – like what you would put on a hot dog at a barbeque.

I went to a wedding a few weeks ago and was so excited to see the waiter with the pigs-in-a-blanket tray, but when I dipped it in the light yellow sauce, I knew it wasn’t going to be good – in fact I think I spit it out. My father went to a wedding last weekend and of all the things he remembered to tell me about it, he mentioned the weird mustard for the pigs-in-a-blanket.

Now I know I’m getting carried away, but I feel very passionate about this issue. So tell me what do you think?

Are you serving pigs-in-a-blanket at your wedding?

  • Absolutely Anne! They're a family favorite.
  • I don't think they're elegant enough for a wedding.

Pigs in a blanket, eh? My kids love it when we make them for lunch--but we skip the mustard completely. Scandalous aren't we?

As a kid, I put ketchup on my dogs. I think at age 12 or 13 people switch to mustard - it's like a rite of passage.

I love pigs in a blanket... I hate mustard. I love ketchup, but not on PIBs... I eat them sans condiments. Is that legal? :)

I do love the pigs.
What I really love is the mustard.

As for serving at a wedding......

Questions I ask a bride and groom,

How formal will the wedding be?

Are there children present at the wedding?

Is it your most favorite food?

Cusine is very subjective to ones personal taste.

It’s about the collective experience for you guests when it comes to the food you are serving.

It simpley may be a bit pedestrian for a Black Tie Wedding

But its your day and if you Love the Pigs,

Send them out an a silver platter with your Monogram in puff pastry!!

Although I heard that mustard is a good thing to lose weight, I hate it. I prefer go to have massage or enjoy the pubspa.com to get some free service.

How can you serve pigs in a blanket at a ethnic wedding? Say for instance, INDIAN?

I guess you'd have to check with the caterer. I've seen them at kosher weddings. And pork/pigs are not kosher.

I'm a vegitarian and will have a vegitarian wedding. I've never been a pigs-in-a-blanket kind of person anyway though.

Well, I'm Jewish and don't eat pork, so... that would be a no.

They can be all beef on the inside, so don't rob yourself of the experience. They're great!

I LOVE this idea! Last summer, my fiance and I went to a beachside wedding where the appetizer of choice was not any ordinary appetizer. That's right, we were greeted with a full nacho and margarita bar.

All of a sudden my fiance quit mentioning how hot a suit was in 95 degree weather and enjoyed himself. We're including the nacho bar in our wedding, but I may have to inquire about the pigs in a blanket too!
