Asking Dad for Permission
At a press conference earlier this week, the President told the audience about the diplomacy and budgeting issues he is dealing with. Not with Congress, but regarding his daughter Jenna's upcoming wedding. It'll be at their Crawford, Texas ranch on May 11th.
He also told the crowd that the groom went to Camp David to ask the father of the bride if he could marry his daughter.
While not every groom has to ask the most powerful man in the world permission to marry the woman he loves, some dads can seem scary to approach. If you think a proposal is in the works, you may want to tell your future fiance that he should talk to your dad - out of respect and tradition not for permission - before getting down on one knee.
Dave said he forgot to ask my dad because he was so nervous about all the proposal details he was working on. (I know I still haven't told you my proposal story yet.) But my dad didn't mind, though I think it would have been a nice story and memory if Dave did ask him.

What a nice topic to touch on Anne. I told my fiance it would mean the world to my dad and me to ask for my hand even before having the marriage talk, he did ask my father and he was just so pleased and touched. And it gave my engagement the right start.
I think that it is a courtesy to ask the dad for his daughter's hand, even if you are older or on a second wedding. Remember, she'll always be his little girl, and he will feel better about the future husband if they start out on the right foot.
